Message from Scripture: 4/2/2021
Today’s message from Scripture comes from Acts 4:36. “Joseph, a Levite from
Cyprus by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas (which is translated Son
of Encouragement), sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the
apostles’ feet.”
When you read of Barnabas’ life, it is obvious
how appropriate his name was. He was an
encouragement to others, like those in need, who he helped by the proceeds of
the sale of land he owned. He encouraged Saul, or Paul, when everyone was too
afraid to associate with him. He was an encouragement to John Mark, who had
previously left the work he and Paul were on, to the point Paul would write, “He
is useful to me for service” (2 Timothy 4:11). Truly, great things happened
in the lives of others because Barnabas was an encourager of others.
The term encouragement is used in Scripture to
mean "exhortation, appeal, request, comfort, and consolation,"
depending on the situation which existed.
In each case, however, it was an appropriate response to the need of
others. Certainly, the early church was
blessed to have Barnabas and others like him seek to encourage others, to bring
out the best in others, and to help others grow in their love and service for
God.
The need for encouragers like Barnabas is as
important today as at any time in history.
There are people who are sick, depressed, hurting, unsure of themselves,
and in need of some kind words of comfort and reassurance. How little time it takes to make a visit,
send a card, or make a phone call. Just
a small act of kindness, or a word fitly spoken, can accomplish so much for
someone in need, and what fruit it can bear for the Lord!
In everyone’s life there are times when encouragement
is needed. Is there someone you know that needs some encouragement? Can you be a son, or daughter, of
encouragement? God bless.
Robert
