Message from Scripture: 10/08/2020
Our message from Scripture today is John 9:4. “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is
day; night is coming when no one can work.”
Our song books are filled with songs about serving God. Some of the ones I remember have phrases in them like, “I want to be a worker for the Lord,” “Each day I’ll do a golden deed,” Make me a servant, Lord, make me like You,” To the work, to the work, we are servants of God,” and “We’ll work till Jesus comes and we’ll be gathered home.” This last one seems to reflect the thought Jesus makes to His disciples, that our lives should be characterized by service throughout our lives.
When we obey the gospel, Jesus indicates He expects us to be involved in the work of the kingdom. It begins when we come in obedience to the gospel. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 7:21). James said faith without works is dead (Jas. 2:17). Paul said, “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith” (Gal. 6:10). To these verses we could add many, many more.
It is good to ask ourselves from time to time what do we do that is distinctive for the Lord? When it comes to all of our activities, we should do them to please God, in a way that glorifies Him. But do we take advantage of opportunities to seek the spiritual over the physical, to serve God when it has nothing to do with gaining an advantage for ourselves? Peter wrote, “Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
When we sing songs about serving God, are we sincere about serving God from a desirous heart? Make today great by choosing to do the works of God, while there is still time. God bless.
Robert
